Description
Following the news of Tame Impala being announced as one of Groovin The Moos headliners, Chugg Entertainment in association with Artist Voice, can now confirm that in addition to these festival appearances, the 2012 J Award winners will also be performing a string of headline shows in major capital cities this April / May. Headline shows will kick off at Melbournes Festival Hall (All Ages) on Friday 26th April, then Sydneys Hordern Pavilion (All Ages) on Thursday 2nd May, before heading to the Brisbane Convention Centre (All Ages) on Wednesday 8th May, Adelaides Thebarton Theatre (All Ages) on Thursday 9th May, then wrapping things up at the Belvoir Amphitheatre (18+) in Perth on Saturday 18th May. West Australian natives, Tame Impala, are Kevin Parker, Dominic Simper, Jay Watson, Nick Allbrook and the most recent addition, Julien Barbagello. They loosely formed in 2007 from a collection of Perth bands releasing their first EP in 2008, followed by the debut album Innerspeaker (2010) and the follow up, Lonerism (2012). The 2010 release of Innerspeaker, with its irreverent, contemporary spin on assumedly dead and forgotten sounds, along with its unique approach to melody; unparalleled yet understated, reaped international recognition for a seemingly new collective of musicians. Recorded and produced entirely by Kevin Parker, in what is essentially a treehouse with 180 degree views of the Indian Ocean, Innerspeaker was then engineered by Death In Vegas Tim Holmes, with Dave Fridmann of Flaming Lips fame on mixing duties. As each single rolled out, from Solitude is Bliss and Lucidity to Why Wont You Make Up Your Mind, so too did the worldwide recognition. The band began their global campaign, playing headline shows and appearing at festivals across North America and Europe, and in doing so, began accruing countless accolades. Following the Innerspeaker whirlwind, and some much needed respite for the band, Parker went back into writing mode with his trusty home recording setup, a portable set up at that, with the album being recorded around the world, most predominantly in Perth and Paris. Again, mixed by Dave Fridmann, the end result was Lonerism, gifted to their eager fans in October 2012. In Kevins own words, Lonerism incorporates an expanded sonic palette, more emotional song writing, and a more pronounced narrative perspective." Beyond widely cited influences of A Day In The Life-era Beatles, musically, Parker takes guidance from a multitude of sources as far as early-70s psychedelia, proto-metal and electronica all arranged with an innate pop sensibility. Displaying stunning originality and technical ability, their music is underpinned by genuinely great song writing; digging deep into the themes of loneliness and isolation. Be Above It applies a cleansing pressure hose to the brain, and Endors Toi plunges you into a deep sleep of ripping guitar riff dreams. Music To Walk Home By is as it says on the tin, announcing its arrival at the front gate with the kind of ceremonious, shredding guitars that makes home seem like a good place to be. Keep On Lying intentionally drifts in and out as if in the middle of a wandering jam at the end of the earth, and Feels Like We Only Go Backwards is as close as Tame Impala will ever come to a top down cruising anthem, albeit one from a cracked reality and soaked in a deep, solo melancholy. Elephant doesnt hide its rollicking, outerspace glam strut, while Nothing That Has Happened So Far Has Been Anything We Could Control arguably boils the essence of the album into a dense, ecstatic brew of utopian proportions. Lonerism has received worldwide praise and endorsements from fellow artists and celebs, and has garnered all star ratings from industry and tastemakers, including perhaps the most heartmelting accolade of them all, the adorable kids of PS22 covering Feels Like We Only Go Backwards. Embarking on a sold out world tour in late 2012, Tame Impala are set to hit the road yet again this February, playing to packed out rooms from New York Citys famed Terminal 5 to the Vic Theatre in Chicago. Festival appearances include Coachella and Sasquatch in the USA, Spains Primavera Sound, Polands Opener Festival, Optimus Alive in Portugal & Vive Latino in Mexico.
